Program Description: Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala 2010. Study-abroad programs offered by U.S. law schools, including those that take place in Latin America, commonly teach courses in English that could have been offered in the United States. By contrast, the Pacific McGeorge Guatemala Summer program will offer two substantive law classes taught in Spanish and will allow students the opportunity to learn about Latin American laws, study with Latin American students, take courses from Guatemalan law professors and complete an externship with a legal institution in this Latin American country. In addition, a third substantive law course will be taught in English.
Program Dates: June 21 - July 30, 2009
Eligibility: Open. The Guatemala summer program is open to graduates and students of ABA-approved programs or state accredited law schools and fully accredited foreign law schools who are in good standing at their respective schools. This type of summer program requires serious preparation by students who enroll in it. Those students who enroll in the courses taught in Spanish must possess a sufficient level of Spanish proficiency in order to successfully participate actively in those courses. Additionally, students who wish to participate in an optional externship with a non-governmental organization in Guatemala following the end of the classroom portion of the program must possess an even higher level of proficiency in Spanish and are encouraged to have taken a course in Legal Spanish either on the Pacific McGeorge campus or at another law school in order to gain familiarity with Spanish legal terminology.
